Introducing QWERTY

Did you know? The qwerty keyboard has been in use since 1878 and it has hardly changed in all that time.

The first typewriters used an ABC… keyboard but this was soon found to be unusable. Many English words like ‘start’ start with S and T which are found in the same sequence in the alphabet.

Once typists became speedy, these two letters were typed in quick succession causing the mechanism to jam.
